3/21/2024 0 Comments Logitech harmony remote controlI also have activities for watching movies on my Blu-ray player and for watching TV through my TiVo DVR. For example, my Watch TV activity turns on my HDTV, Motorola cable box, and home theater audio system specifies the TV input the cable box hooks into and tunes the audio receiver to the input from the HDTV. If the app finds all your devices, you then proceed to setting up activities-combinations of settings needed for typical entertainment center use. After each device is set up, the app tests the settings it retrieves from Logitech’s huge database to make sure they actually control the device.ĭuring setup you provide make and model info on your home entertainment devices, and the software retrieves the IR or Bluetooth remote codes from Logitech’s database. After that, it prompts you to create a account if you don’t have one, and then to enter the make and model info on your components, one at a time. After you plug the Hub into a wall outlet and put it into pairing mode by pressing a button on the device, the app detects it and collects the info needed to connect it to your Wi-Fi network. Both provide setup support for most common entertainment center components. I tested the stand-alone Hub with both the Android and iOS apps (more about the hardware remotes later). (The company sells additional Harmony IR Mini Blasters for $10.) Logitech gives you one blaster with the stand-alone Hub and the Smart Control, two with the Ultimate. To help distribute signals from the hub to devices on multiple shelves, you can plug in up to two IR blasters (small transmitters on long cables that echo the Hub’s signals) to the back of the Hub. You can even put the Hub inside a home entertainment system cabinet. But in addition to having to learn the user interface (in order to control various different devices), you also have the ongoing inconvenience of IR signals themselves-most notably, you must position the remote within line of sight of the component you wish to control.īut because RF and Wi-Fi signals can go through walls, line-of-site communication isn’t required-you must only be in the general vicinity of the Hub to control it. Why a base station? Most universal remotes rely on the same IR signals that standard remotes use-you simply program the universal remote to replicate the signals for all the remotes it replaces.

I have drilled the end of the knob blank and glued in colored dowels (with a contrasting color for reverse) to denote the shift pattern. I resorted to a pair of Channellock pliers which ruined the finish and dug into the wood before the knob released- the threads were unharmed. Strength? I accidentally installed one of these with a bit of uncured finish in the threads and was unable to remove the knob. The dried drips at the bottom are unseen when the knob is in place and can easily be sanded away. I finish the knob by threading an appropriate bolt into the finished knob and dip in polyurethane, set it upright and let the excess drip off. On short shifter cars like my Mazda MX5 I prefer the knob to cover all of the exposed shift lever coming to rest on the very top of the boot. The threaded hole doesn't begin until some depth into the knob. That counter bored portion needs to fit over the unthreaded portion without interference lest you crack this thinnest portion of the knob. I tend to use hard, tough wood such as ebony, mesquite, pink ivory, etc and have never had a thread strip or a knob break.Īs a rule for a bit cleaner look the hole in the knob needs to be deep enough to allow it to extend below the threaded portion of the shift lever. I currently forgo all of that and simply drill and tap the knob. It machines easily on a wood lathe with HSS or carbide tools) and have also drilled and tapped the correct thread in a short section of 1/2-13" all-thread and threaded the knob to accept the insert. I have turned some of my own inserts out of aluminum (used when I want a decorative end such as on a truck shifter.
3/20/2024 0 Comments Roof rafter tiesNow in order to select the correct table, we must understand 2 things: Which Live Load is to be use and whether or not the ceiling joists are attached to the roof rafters. Roof Rafter Span TablesĪs mentioned above, the span tables within the code list the allowable roof rafter spans for common lumber sizes based on what design load scenario is applied.Īccording to Section R802.4.1, roof rafters are to be sized based on Tables R802.4.1(1) through R802.4.1(8). This does not include construction or environmental loads.ĭead loads are defined by the code as follows: Loads produced by the use and occupancy of the building or other structure. Live loads are defined by the code as follows: The code recognizes 2 types of loads that are applied to roof rafters: Live Loads and Dead Loads. Before we look at these tables, we need to make sure the correct design loads are determined prior to selecting the correct table. These span tables list allowable roof rafter spans for common lumber sizes based on what design load scenario is applied. Wood roof rafters are sized based on one of eight tables found in the code. In this post we will learn how to correctly size a roof rafter based on its span, spacing and species of wood used.įun Tip: To learn the difference between the International Residential Code (IRC) verses the International Building Code (IBC), be sure to check out this POST. Section R802.4 outlines the wood roof rafter framing criteria which also includes prescriptive span tables. The allowable roof rafter span tables in the 2018 version are found in section R802.4 while the tables in the 2015 version are found in section R802.5. (Note: the table references have changed in the 2018 version of the IRC. The design and construction of wood roof rafters are found in Section R802.4 of the International Residential Code (IRC). In this post we will cover wood roof framing members, specifically roof rafters. The International Residential Code (IRC) recognizes two types of conventional roof and ceiling framing systems for buildings that are subject to the International Residential Code (IRC): wood framing and cold-formed steel framing. Roof/ceiling members must be properly designed to ensure they provide adequate support as required by the loads that are imposed on them as well as making sure these loads are correctly transferred to the supporting walls and/or supporting structural elements. With global carbon emissions continuing to rise, the climate target of 1.5C is looking less and less likely without interventions like this. At each stage, the leftover chemical residues are recycled back in the process, forming a closed reaction that repeats endlessly with no waste materials. These limestone flakes are sieved off and heated in a third chamber, called a calciner, until they decompose, giving off pure CO2, which is captured and stored. The lime seizes hold of the dissolved CO2, producing small flakes of limestone. The potash absorbs CO2 from the air, after which the liquid is piped to a second chamber and mixed with calcium hydroxide (builder's lime). There are several ways to do it, but the one that Carbon Engineering's system uses fans to draw air containing 0.04% CO2 (today's atmospheric levels) across a filter drenched in potassium hydroxide solution – a caustic chemical commonly known as potash, used in soapmaking and various other applications. The science of direct air capture is straightforward. "We need to pull 800 gigatonnes out of the atmosphere. Yet he admits the scale of the task ahead is dizzying. "Once one is done, it's a cookie cutter model, you simply build replicas of that plant," says Oldham. But the firm is drawing up blueprints for a much larger plant in the oil fields of west Texas, which would fix 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually. That's where direct air capture comes in.Ĭarbon Engineering's plant in Squamish is designed as a testbed for different technologies. Nor can it address the CO2 that is already in the air. But this is impractical for small, numerous point sources like the planet's billion or so automobiles. Most carbon capture focuses on cleaning emissions at the source: scrubbers and filters on smokestacks that prevent harmful gases reaching the atmosphere. "With DAC, you can remove any emission, anywhere, from any moment in time. "We have a climate change problem and it's caused by an excess of CO2," says Carbon Engineering chief executive Steve Oldham. It is a small start, and a somewhat larger plant in Texas is in the works, but this is the typical scale of a DAC plant today. When it becomes operational in September, Carbon Engineering's prototype direct air capture plant will begin scrubbing a tonne of CO2 from the air every year. If the world is to meet Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming to 1.5C by 2100, sights like this may be necessary by mid-century.īut step back for a moment to 2021, to Squamish, British Columbia where, against a bucolic skyline of snowy mountains, the finishing touches are being put to a barn-sized device covered in blue tarpaulin. Now the legacy of those fossil fuels – the CO2 in our air – is being pumped back into the emptied reservoirs. This Texan landscape was made famous for the billions of barrels of oil pulled out of its depths during the 20th Century. Together, they're trying to cool the planet by sucking carbon dioxide out of the air. You're looking at a direct air capture (DAC) plant, one of tens of thousands like it across the globe. You think to yourself that it looks like a gigantic air conditioning unit, blown up to incredible proportions. Behind the wall, you glimpse the snaking pipes and gantries of a chemical plant.Īs you get closer you see the wall is moving, shimmering – it is entirely made up of huge fans whirring in steel boxes. In the distance, they lap at a colossal grey wall five storeys high and almost a kilometre long. The land here is mirrored: the choppy silver-blue waves of an immense solar array stretch out in all directions. Walk out of the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland, Texas, and drive north across the sun-baked scrub where a few remaining oil pumpjacks nod lazily in the heat, and then you'll see it: a glittering palace rising out of the pancake-flat ground. If you're using Photoshop CS5 or earlier, you'll want to check out our original Turn A Photo Into A Collage Of Polaroids tutorial. Anyone can do this, and as always, I'll be covering every step along the way.Īs I mentioned, you'll need Photoshop CS6 or CC to follow along. Don't let the "Advanced" part fool you, though. It also features a slightly different way of creating the effect (compared with the way I covered in the original version), this time taking advantage of Photoshop's shape layers as well as a little-known but very powerful feature found in Photoshop's Advanced Blending options. This version of the tutorial has been completely re-written and updated from the original and is now fully compatible with both Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud). It may look complicated at first, but as we'll see, it's actually a very easy effect to create in Photoshop, especially since much of the work is just simple repetition. In other words, we'll create what looks like a bunch of polaroid photos spread out randomly on the background, yet within each polaroid is a small section of your larger overall image. In this Photo Effects tutorial, we'll learn how to turn any image into a collage of polaroids. 3/20/2024 0 Comments Completed map ghost of tsushimaGood open world games thrive on their power to make you wonder 'what's over there?', and all too often repeating mechanics like towers to climb and enemy bases to clear mean you already know.
